I am Cuba (Soy Cuba)

Directed by Mikhail Kalatozov in 1964, then later, discovered and presented by Martin Scorcese and Frances Ford Coppola.

The film consists of 4 vignettes exploring the suffering of Cuban people under the dictatorship of Fulgencio Batista. It is about courage, will, humanity and the need for revolution at a point when people can no longer endure their situation, this is accompanied with wide angle shots, extreme close ups, all in black and white. There is also use of infrared film, to exaggerate contrast.

Also, have a read about the film, it was met with a cold reaction when it was first released  in 1964 and was literally forgotten about, until the 1990’s. It is an amazing collaboration between the Soviet Union and Cuba.

The library have a copy of the film, and there is also I am Cuba, The Siberian Mammoth a doc/film that examines the creation of I am Cuba.
